Teddy Sumner Continues Michaelian Tradition
Since 1921, Michaelian & Kohlberg (M&K) has been a leading source for fine, hand-made decorative rugs that range from traditional to contemporary styles. Using handspun Highland wool and silk, M&K’s hand-knotted rugs can be found in embassies around the world, boutique hotels, executive suites, luxury retail stores and large residential properties.
Known as an innovator of the rug industry, Michaelian & Kohlberg (M&K) founder Frank Michaelian traveled extensively through what are now Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran during the 1920s and 1930s. Today, his grandson Teddy Sumner, a master colorist who is considered a pioneer of natural dyeing, is both owner and principal designer at M&K. A trained fine art painter who has been creating rug designs for over 30 years, Sumner is continually inspired by his extensive world travels and his profound love of nature.
In the 1980s and 1990s, M&K reestablished the use of hand-spun yarn and vegetable dyes in carpet weaving and, as a result, Sumner earned numerous awards for design excellence from the American Society of Interior Designers and the US Rug Importers Association.
